How Clean are your brushes???

As a makeup artist, I deep clean my brushes after every client. That’s part of my job and how I keep all of my tools sanitized. No one wants to see a pro applying makeup on a person with dirty brushes! Though what about how much we clean our personal brushes? Has it been a week? What about two weeks? The answer for some is, well, you’re not sure when the last time you cleaned your brushes! That’s where I come in because today you’re going to have your brushes in tip top shade!

First

The easiest and most effective way to clean your brushes is to have them all in a cup, facing up. You can separate them by eyes and face, but it’s not necessary.

Second

You’ll need a good brush shampoo and 70% alcohol. For brush cleanser, I like the solid beautyblender blendercleanser. I love that is has a little scrubby extra attachment, so you can really work the brush through. If you prefer liquid brush shampoo, then definitely use the Real Techniques Deep Cleansing Gel. Both are wonderful brush shampoos; it just depends on how you like to clean your brushes.

Third

Fill a large bowl or sink with warm water. Dip the brushes, ONLY the bristles. Many people note that their brushes shed, and that is due to the glue in the base of the brush getting wet over and over. Do this until you have about 10 brushes. Take the wet brush and swirl it on the solid bar cleanser, or put a small amount of cleansing gel, and swirl the brush in the palm of your hand. You’ll start to see the color coming out (imagine that was on your skin over and over!) and dip the brush back into the water, still only dipping the brush. Repeat cleansing until water runs clear. Complete this step until all brushes have been cleansed.

Four

Once all brushes are clean, you need to arrange them onto a towel. Have you ever noticed after you have cleansed your brush that the bristles look out of the shape they were in almost as if they are splayed everywhere? This is why you arrange them flat. Mold each brush to how they looked when you first got them. For instance, for large powder brushes, I take my hands and smooth them into a compact, almost ball shape. For fluffy eye shadow brushes, I swirl the brush and make it look fluffy, and so forth. Make sure the brushes have enough room to not knock into each other.

Five

Most people skip this step, because it can potentially dry brushes a bit, but this keeps them sanitized. Take the 70% alcohol and put it into a spray bottle. Lightly spray each brush with the alcohol which not only helps brushes dry faster, but also applies enough alcohol to be properly sanitized. If you used 90% alcohol, it would dissolve so quickly that the brushes wouldn’t be sanitized.

In our current health crisis, using sanitized makeup brushes is very important, but this also will keep your brushes lasting longer, feeling softer, and doing the job we want them to do!

Skincare for Stay at Home Care

As we are all dealing with the pandemic of the Coronavirus, one of the things we can do is focus on at home care. From doing a face mask to trying an exfoliator, little things that are a part of relaxation are healing. Because as our body deals with anxiety and stress, we can do things to make our skin and body feel more comforted by learning small ways to heal our bodies, and our soul. As an esthetician, I see daily how our skin issues increased by changing environment. Some of the biggest changes with our skin are dehydration, stress, and hormonal changes.

Stress

As we all deal with stress differently, the amount of cortisol our skin is producing (the main stress hormone) can change our skin. Some of the biggest ways to change how we deal with stress, is mediation and exercise. Some products can also make a huge difference.

This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray- This product not only smells amazing (the main ingredient is lavender) but helps soothe your body to sleep. I also spray it around my bedroom whenever I am feeling stress, and it helps relax me. It’s available in two sizes, so you can get a smaller version to try first.

Awake Beauty Keep Calm and Roll On- This product has been in my purse as a necessity for weeks. It has a cooling rollerball and is infused with peppermint. I pus this on my pressure points, and it immediately helps me calm down and relax. This might be used mostly to calm people, but it has many other benefits. For many of my friends who are pregnant, this has been their savior. It helps cool your body, and the peppermint helps calm nausea. Also, this is great for migraine sufferers. Pressing this cooling ball on to

your temples and forehead helps soothe and relax your headache to feel much better. (Although this is not medical advice. Always check with your physician.)

Combination Skin

Did your skin go from super oily to dry, or vice versa? This can be brought on from quite a few factors, but what can we do to help it! Some of the biggest issues tend to be not enough exfoliation and needing a different face wash.

Grown Alchemist Polishing Facial Exfoliant- One of the first reasons I fell in love with this product is that it is vegan and synthetic free. For an exfoliant, that is a big plus! When you go through and use this product it really is a pleasure. Your skin feels amazing after, and the product smells clean and lush. When applying, a little bit goes a long way. For most of my clients, I recommend using a marble size amount to use for face, neck and decollate. Massage on for a minute and rinse. While this product can be used daily, it is best to use an exfoliant twice a week, so you do not over exfoliate.

Dermalogica Active Clay Cleanser- This product is pure genius for combo skin girls and guys. It has ingredients with charcoal and

kaolin clay, to help with pores, congested skin, has moisturizing lipids to aid hydrated skin, and replenish the moisture we need for glowing skin. This product is also vegan, cruelty free, and even the packaging is recyclable as are almost all Dermalogica products.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is the bane of existence for every dry skin sufferer. Especially if you’re a makeup wearer. It’s a balance of how to add in  moisture without making you feel like your skin is an oil slick. Most of us have been there. Also, as your skin is maturing, you’ll need moisture even more! Fear not, there are some products that many people swear by, and I, as a dry skin gal, swear by these.

Peach and Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum- Throughout my years of a makeup artist and an esthetician, there has never been a product I rave about more. This product, in all its glory, helps EVERY skin type. Packed with peach peptide, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and more. Peach peptide helps with refining skin, hyaluronic acid locks on to moisture, and niacinamide is what I call the Z Pack on skin. It helps with everything. From helping dry skin, acne, anti-aging, and hyperpigmentation, this product does it all!

Origins Drink Up Intensive- For many of us, the idea of doing a sleep mask sounds like a disaster in our hair, sheets, and pillow. Not so with this gem. It is packed full of avocado and swiss glacial water. Avocado is chock full of lipids adding more moisture for your skin, and this is what drew me to this product. This mask not only smells yummy, but it is also cooling. It is perfect for dry, cracked, needing some help, skin. Application is easy. At nighttime, apply half a pea size to a pea sized amount all over face and take a snooze. You wake up and feel much softer supple skin and feeling refreshed.
